Update: Victims of fatal rural Brooten crash identified

BROOTEN — The Stearns County Sheriff's Department has identified the victims of a two-vehicle fatal crash that happened Wednesday afternoon south of Brooten.

Kassie Lyn Dillon, 16, of Carlos, was killed in the crash.

A passenger in her vehicle, Justin Virgil Cumberbatch, 20, of Alexandria, and the driver of the other vehicle, Christopher Wayne Ziemer, 42, of Belgrade, were seriously wounded.

According to the Stearns County Sheriff's office, the accident happened around 4:32 p.m. at the intersection of Stearns County roads 18 and 19 in Crow Lake Township, about four miles south of Brooten.

A 2002 Dodge Neon, driven by Dillon, was going south on Stearns County Road 18 when it was struck broadside by a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Ziemer, that was going west on County Road 19.

Ziemer failed to stop at the stop sign, according to the sheriff's report, and his vehicle struck the Dodge Neon in the driver's door.

Dillon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ziemer was transported by Life Link Air Ambulance to Centra Care Hospital in St. Cloud.

Cumberbatch was transported by Brooten Ambulance to Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, and later transferred to St. Cloud by air ambulance.

Both men sustained life-threatening injuries, according to the report, which indicates one is a 20-year-old male from Alexandria and the other is a 42-year-old male from Belgrade.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted on the scene by: Minnesota State Patrol, Brooten Ambulance, Brooten Fire Department and Life Link Air Ambulance.
