Suspect arrested in swamp near Benson after fleeing officers

PENNOCK — A 46-year-old man was arrested Thursday after a high-speed chase that started in in Pennock and ended in a cattail-filled swamp near Benson.

According to a Swift County Sheriff John Holtz, the incident started around 7 a.m. on Kandiyohi County Road 7 and U.S. Highway 12 in Pennock when Kandiyohi County deputies stopped a vehicle in connection with a drug search warrant that was being executed nearby.

While attempting to confirm the driver's identification and verify an arrest warrant for the driver, the suspect got back into the vehicle and fled the scene and a high speed pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle traveled about 31 miles on county roads in Kandiyohi County and Swift County and ended in a swamp near Benson.

The driver, which the Tribune is not naming at this time, fled on foot into the wetland.

With the aid of multiple law enforcement agencies, the suspect was later apprehended in the area where he abandoned his vehicle.

He is being held in the Kandiyohi County Jail pending charges for felony drug possession, felony fleeing in a motor vehicle and reckless driving.
