Multi-vehicle crash near site of semi fire injures two
PAYNESVILLE – The Minnesota State Patrol responded to a chain reaction crash early Friday morning near the site of a semi that had caught fire along Highway 23.
According to the report from the State Patrol, the crash occurred near Veterans Drive shortly before 6 a.m. Friday. A Ford Ranger traveling east on Highway 23 reportedly slowed as it passed the semi, which had burned in the westbound lane. A Mercury Sable also traveling east rear-ended the Ford, and a Hyundai ESS struck the Mercury, which was stopped in the traffic lane. The impact caused the Mercury to spin around and go into the south ditch of Highway 23.
The driver and passenger in the Hyundai were transported to the Paynesville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford was identified as Norman Lylewayne Wisted, 75, of Hawick. An unidentified 16-year-old boy was driving the Mercury, and Gaye Alice Smith, 58, of Spicer, was driving the Hyundai. The Hyundai passenger was Walton Hastings Smith, 52, of Spicer. The State Patrol report says all were wearing seat belts,
