WILLMAR — An informational meeting on a project to resurface U.S. Highway 71 is set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will hold the open house at Cross Roads Community United Methodist Church, 3400 113th Ave. N.E., Spicer, to discuss plans to resurface Highway 71 from the junction of state Highway 23 to just north of state Highway 9 in Kandiyohi County.

In addition to the resurfacing project, MnDOT will also construct left- and right-turning lanes, a bypass lane and a pedestrian underpass on the same stretch of road. The underpass is part of a state Department of Natural Resources trail extension from New London to Sibley State Park.

Construction is expected to begin in spring of 2018, and the project will require a detour.

There will not be a formal presentation during the event Thursday, but the public will have the opportunity to learn more about the project, its timeline and the detour by talking to MnDOT personnel and viewing maps of the project area.
