WILLMAR — The Kandiyohi County Board will have a full day Tuesday: the regular meeting in the morning and a work session in the afternoon to discuss a local option sales tax.

The county has been considering the tax to help fill the funding gap for critical transportation needs.

Minnesota counties are allowed to adopt a local sales tax of up to half a cent to fund designated transportation and road improvement projects. The tax ends when projects are paid for. A half-cent local sales tax in Kandiyohi County would generate an estimated $2 million a year.

The work session to discuss the possible tax has been set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Public Works building, 1801 U.S. Highway 12 E. in Willmar.

During the regular meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday — which is in the commissioners' regular meeting room at the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services Building, 2200 23rd St. N.E. in Willmar — a bid letting is scheduled for a boiler project. A new courthouse boiler will replace the district heating system which is being phased out by Willmar Municipal Utilities.

Among several other agenda items Tuesday during the regular meeting is a discussion of the buffer rule ordinance. The County Board decided earlier this summer to handle its own enforcement of the Minnesota buffer strip law, rather than turning over the responsibility to the state.

The complete meeting agenda is available on the county website at

The County Board also meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday as the Human Services Committee.
