Willmar, Minn., School Board to discuss budget when it meets Monday

WILLMAR — The Willmar School Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the board room on the first floor of the Willmar Education and Arts Center, 611 Fifth St. S.W.

The board will consider the 2013-14 budget Monday. The fiscal year begins on July 1, and state law requires school districts to approve budgets before the year starts.

The budget includes $45,667,460 in general fund revenue and $47,379,232 in general fund expenditures. The general fund covers operating expenses of the district.

According to the budget documents, the district will use some of its undesignated reserve funds to make up the difference between planned revenue and expenses in the general fund.

Other funds for community education, food service or debt service are separate funds. Revenue from one fund cannot be used in another.

When all funds are combined, the district projects total revenue of $53,512,302.71 in the coming year and total expenditures of $55,456,709.28.

The general fund budget includes a $600,000 federal grant awarded last week for use at Kennedy Elementary School.

Other items on the agenda for Monday’s meeting include a review of bids for several capital projects for the summer, including improvements at the Kennedy kitchen and roof repair at several buildings.

The board will also discuss plans for a district facilities study.

The board listens to public comments related to the agenda at the beginning of the meeting and allows time at the end of the meeting for comments not related to the agenda.

Board meetings are shown live on Willmar local cable access channel 18 and are recorded to be shown later on Channel 19.
