NTSB investigators at scene of fatal Florida pileups; at least 10 dead

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The National Transportation Safety Board has sent investigators to the scene of the north Florida highway pileups that killed at least 10 people.

The NTSB says it is assessing whether it wants to formally join the investigation into Sunday's crashes that happened before dawn on Interstate 75 outside Gainesville. Drivers said they couldn't see because of thick fog and smoke from a nearby brushfire.

The crashes happened on both sides of the highway. At least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers were involved, and some burst into flames.

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. The FHP had closed the highway earlier Sunday because of the poor visibility but reopened it before the crash.
