Juvenile arrested after standoff in rural Lac qui Parle County, man faces gun charges

MADISON — A male juvenile was arrested after an 8-hour armed standoff with law enforcement Monday in rural Lac qui Parle County.

According to a news release from County Sheriff Rick Halvorson, officers were investigating a report that Kevin Ernest Morris, 40, of rural Dawson, was in possession of firearms as a convicted felon. A search warrant was executed and 16 firearms were seized, along with ammunition, ammunition clips, drug paraphernalia and marijuana.

The teen was found in the residence when the search warrant was executed and surrendered after an approximately 8-hour negotiation. He was taken to Prairie Lakes in Willmar and faces two felony charges of obstructing the legal process.

The name of the boy was not released by the sheriff.

Morris faces two felony charges of felon in possession of a firearm and one gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment. His first appearance in Lac qui Parle District Court was Wednesday. Bail was set at $100,000. His next appearance is Monday.

Many agencies assisted at the scene, including the West Central SWAT Team, Kandiyohi County SWAT team, Dawson Ambulance and Police Departments, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, the State Patrol and State Patrol Aviation Division, State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and State Department of Natural Resources. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office provided communications assistance with the Southwest Minnesota Regional Communications Vehicle.
