Propane leak near Dassel, Minn., leads to evacuation

DASSEL — Meeker County authorities evacuated citizens within a half-mile of a cabin on Lake Jennie located about 5 miles south of Dassel Wednesday evening after a neighbor smelled propane.

The evacuation was ordered after the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office and the Dassel Fire Department were called for a propane leak at 6:01 p.m. to the property at 71617 178th St. in Collinwood Township.

The sheriff’s office said the neighbor could smell propane, found a hose leaking, and alerted authorities. The owner of the property, Jim Peterson, 72, from Eagan, was contacted and responded to his cabin on Lake Jennie to assist.

Authorities evacuated citizens in a half-mile radius as a safety precaution and were allowed to return to their homes once the leak was contained and the propane had dissipated.

The sheriff’s office determined a rubber hose had burst near the propane tank, allowing an undetermined amount of propane to leak from the 800-gallon tank. After the incident, the gauge on the tank indicated 10 percent remained in the tank.

The sheriff’s office said Peterson is unsure how much propane was in the tank prior to the leak. There was no other damage to property and the only loss is the propane.
