YM Sheriff expects limited information to be released today regarding Clarkfield gun incident

GRANITE FALLS -- Authorities continue to be tight-lipped about the two-state investigation surrounding a gun being pulled during a law enforcement interview Tuesday at a Clarkfield home.

Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Bill Flaten, whose agency was present at the Clarkfield home to provide security assistance for an interview by South Dakota investigators, had meetings Thursday with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and South Dakota authorities.

Flaten in a phone interview Thursday morning had said he hoped to release more information by the afternoon about the incident in his county, but he said in an interview later Thursday that he would be delayed "because of the complexity of working with the BCA and the state of South Dakota."

Flaten says he expects that there will be a release from himself and the BCA sometime this morning, though there are aspects of the case that are ongoing and the information may be limited to "this is what we can tell you at this point."

The interview Tuesday in Clarkfield, in western Minnesota, was with agents from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. The interview lasted about 90 minutes before a handgun was produced, Flaten said. A shot was fired during a struggle between the person and the interviewing officers.

No one was injured by the gunshot nor in the struggle, Flaten said Tuesday in a news release. The scene and the weapon were secured, and the BCA assisted at the scene with the investigation.

The person has been in custody in a secure facility but has not been named. No charges are pending currently in Minnesota.
