Granite Falls homicide suspect in custody

GRANITE FALLS -- The suspect in the Granite Falls double homicide is in custody.

Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Bill Flaten confirmed Tuesday night that Andrew Joseph Dikken is in the Yellow Medicine County Jail in Granite Falls.

Dikken, 28, of Granite Falls and formerly of Renville, has been sought since Labor Day in the shooting deaths of Kara Ann Monson, 26, of Granite Falls, and Christopher Allan Panitzke, 28, of Redwood Falls. Monson died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, and Panitzke died Sept. 8 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis of complications from the multiple gunshot wounds he suffered.

The shooting occurred at Monson's Granite Falls home in the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Panitzke was able to call 911. He was first treated in Granite Falls before being airlifted to Minneapolis where he later died.

Dikken's vehicle -- the subject of numerous alerts from law enforcement asking the public to be vigilant -- had been found in a gravel pit near the Minnesota River south of Sacred Heart on Sept. 4. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies had conducted extensive searches for Dikken in that area without success.

The investigation has been led by the Granite Falls Police Department, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension with the assistance of other agencies.

Flaten had no further details immediately and said a statement was expected from the BCA later tonight.
