KANDIYOHI — A 26-year-old Milbank, S.D., man had to be extricated from his vehicle after the car crashed head-on into a pickup around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday east of Kandiyohi on U.S. Highway 12.

According to updated information from the State Patrol, Jordan T. Volkenant was then flown to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of his serious injuries. He was listed in critical condition this morning.

Volkenant was westbound in a 2009 Chevy Impala and crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Kevin J. Vanvleet, 29, of Eden Valley.

The crash was witnessed by Gaylon Odland, 52, of Spicer, who was driving a 2010 Peterbilt and following Volkenant when he saw Volkenant drive into the other lane and then the head-on collision.

The semi truck was also involved in the crash. The State Patrol is investigating to determine which of the other vehicles struck the truck.

Odland was not injured. Vanvleet was transferred to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, Jacob J. Kalkbrenner, 18, of Litchfield, was treated and released at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
