Montevideo awards $2.1 million bid for new fire hall

MONTEVIDEO — Construction on a new fire hall should be underway by June in Montevideo.

City Council members on Monday awarded the low bid of $2,185,355 to KUE Contractors, of Watkins, according to City Manager Steve Jones.

It was among six firms offering bids for the project, which saw competitive bidding.

The new fire hall will be built on North 11th Street, directly across from the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital. The site is currently vacant and offers access on Windom Avenue and 11th Street.

The city has had to acquire the property through court proceedings after the owners did not respond to city requests to negotiate its purchase.

Cities Edge Architects, of Willmar, prepared preliminary plans for the structure.

It will enclose approximately 13,000 square feet, and include six double-deep bays for vehicles. Three of the bays will allow drive-through access. The structure will also include a hose tower, training room, and office and command center.

The main building will consist of pre-cast concrete walls and a steel truss roof structure.

The low bid keeps the project well within city estimates for it. The city had estimated possible overall costs of $2.5 million including construction, land acquisition, engineering and architectural work.
