Kindergartner brings gun to Benson school, all students safe

BENSON — A firearm brought to Northside Elementary this morning by a young student was immediately taken by school staff members and all students are safe and are continuing with their normal school day.

According to a news release from Swift County Sheriff John Holtz, the Sheriff’s Office, Benson Police and school officials were notified of the situation just after 8 a.m. this morning. A kindergarten student brought the firearm to school and other students immediately told a teacher about the gun. The firearm was immediately seized by staff.

There was no intent by the child to cause harm and everyone is safe, Holtz noted, adding that both the Benson Schools and law enforcement want to assure parents that the crisis plan was followed, all proper authorities were alerted and that the incident was taken very seriously.
