Litchfield to increase electric, sewer rates in 2009
LITCHFIELD -- The city of Litchfield will increase its utility rates in 2009.
Mayor Vern Madson said Tuesday the city will increase its electric rates by 8 percent and its sewer rates by 4.5 percent in 2009.
The City Council approved the increases during Monday's regular meeting. Madson said the increase will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2009.
Last year, the council increased the city sewer rates by 4.4 percent, Madson said.
According to the Tribune archive, the city also increased its 2008 electric rates by 7 percent from 2007.
Madson said the city has increased its electrical rates over the last several years based on rate increases of the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency and the Western Area Power Administration. This year the two power companies raised their rates by 8 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
Madson said Litchfield uses those company rates as guides for needed utility increases, but the city does not raise its rates to a similar level.
