Woman dies in Redwood Falls fire, man dies in Minneapolis fire

MINNEAPOLIS -- Authorities in Minneapolis and Redwood Falls, Minn., are investigating after two people died in unrelated residential fires.

In Minneapolis, an 89-year-old man called 911 about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday to report a fire. He spoke with the dispatcher until he lost conciousness, probably from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters arrived about two minutes after the man called and found the house on fire. The man was inside, but was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The arson squad says the man was seen smoking a cigar earlier that evening, and careless smoking may be the cause of the fire.

In Redwood Falls, emergency responders say they found a 40-year-old woman inside a burning home about 7 p.m. Tuesday. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities have not identified either of the fire victims.
