Snowmobile incident under investigation in YM County

HANLEY FALLS -- The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident involving a snowmobile early Sunday morning.

According to a news release, a deputy was on routine patrol around 1 a.m. Sunday when he observed a person lying in the ditch in rural Hanley Falls on County Road 18.

It appeared that the individual had been involved in a snowmobile accident. The Hanley Falls first responders and fire department and the Cottonwood Ambulance responded to the scene. The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to Granite Falls Hospital. The actual snowmobile was not present at the scene and it appeared to have taken off after the throttle had frozen wide open after crashing.

The Hanley Falls Fire Department retrieved a couple of snowmobiles and followed the track of the runaway snowmobile. The sled was found 2.5 miles away in a grove of trees. The snowmobile had crossed over two roads before coming to a stop. It appeared that alcohol was a factor in the accident. The case is still under investigation.
