Granite Falls man to serve 36 months in prison for assault

GRANITE FALLS -- A 29-year-old man with prior domestic assault convictions is headed to prison for an assault in which he choked and head-butted a female victim.

District Judge Bruce Christopherson sentenced Steven Everett Tipton of Granite Falls to 36 months in prison Tuesday after he was convicted of a felony count of domestic assault and three felony counts of violating a no contact order. The criminal complaint against Tipton charges he assaulted the 22-year-old victim during an incident Dec. 19 at her residence in Wood Lake.

The complaint alleges he choked her and threw her to the ground after an argument outside the home. She locked herself in the house, but he broke in by crawling through a basement window.

He then head-butted her twice, and punched and kicked her before she struck him with a frying pan in self defense.

The complaint charges that two children witnessed portions of the assault and the victim reported previous instances of physical violence against her by Tipton.

Tipton has a 2002 conviction for fifth-degree domestic assault and a 2005 conviction for terroristic threats, according to court records.
