Two brothers arrested in connection with shooting near Granite Falls

GRANITE FALLS –– Two brothers from rural Balaton are in jail and awaiting arraignment in Yellow Medicine County District Court in connection with a shooting incident last week in Granite Falls that seriously injured a man.

The suspects, who are identified by Yellow Medicine County authorities as Devin Donald Hexum, 21, and Derek Michael Hexum, 19, were arrested following a 45-minute police chase Tuesday afternoon that crossed several county lines in southwest Minnesota.

The two men are being held in connection with the July 18 shooting of Daniel Scheff, south of Granite Falls.

Scheff was found lying on state Highway 23, bleeding and covered in blood from a gunshot wound, and airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis in critical condition.

Authorities did not say what led them to link the brothers to the assault.

According to a news release issued Wednesday, the Yellow M  edicine County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Marshall Police Department to pursue the suspects.

The chase began at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday south of Marshall on state Highway 23.

The brothers, traveling in a 1993 Chevy pickup, went through Lyon and Lincoln counties with police in pursuit.

They came to a stop on a gravel road in Lincoln County when a trooper with the Minnesota State Patrol used a “pursuit intervention technique” maneuver to stop the pickup on Lincoln County Road 137, about a half a mile from the South Dakota line.

The vehicle rolled on its top in the ditch as a result of the PIT maneuver.

According to the State Patrol, Derek Hexum, was driving the vehicle at the time. The State Patrol report indicates Derek Hexum currently lives in Gordon, Ga.

The brothers were treated for injuries at the Hendricks Community Hospital and released to the custody of the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff.

Corey Sik, 45, of Marshall, the State Patrol officer involved with the incident, was not injured.

Other agencies involved in the pursuit were the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Benton Police Department.
