Watkins man hurt Friday in tractor-train crash
WATKINS -- The Meeker County Sheriff 's Office said 18-year-old Patrick Jay Libbesmeier of rural Watkins was treated at Paynesville Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries he suffered in a farm tractor-train crash Friday morning.
The sheriff 's office received a call at 9:05 a.m. to the crash at a private crossing located one-quarter mile east of Watkins. Deputies determined a model 8930 Case IH tractor driven by Libbesmeier was traveling southbound on a field road and was crossing the railroad tracks at a field crossing.
A Canadian Pacific train traveling eastbound at approximately 40 mph approached the crossing and struck the tractor as it began to cross the tracks, causing extensive damage to the tractor. The farm tractor was towing a manure spreader.
The impact sheared off the front of the tractor just ahead of the cab. The tractor, valued at $80,000, is a total loss. The lead engine on the train was damaged but a dollar amount has not been determined at this time, the Sheriff 's Office said in a news release.
Libbesmeier was transported by a family member to the Paynesville Hospital for treatment. Canadian Pacific railroad personnel reported no injuries.
The Sheriff 's Office reminds citizens to use due care whenever crossing railroad tracks. A train traveling at only 40 mph is traveling a distance of nearly 60 feet per second. A train that is seen a block away will arrive at the crossing in a matter of seconds.
