Garage burns in Darwin, teen allegedly admits to playing with matches

DARWIN -- A 14-year-old boy allegedly admitted to playing with matches and starting a fire that burned a garage Friday afternoon in Darwin.

According to a news release from the Meeker County Sheriff's office, dispatch received a 911 call around 4:20 p.m. Friday regarding a garage on fire at 123 Second St. N. in Darwin.

The Dassel Fire Department extinguished the fire and the 14-year-old was interviewed by a deputy and the assistant fire chief. He allegedly admitted to playing with matches shortly before the fire happened and said that he thought he put the fire out, but admitted to burning a cardboard box in the northwest portion of the garage, where the fire appeared to have started.

The owner of the property, Harvey Riebe of Darwin, estimated the garage value at $10,000. The renter estimated between $3,000 and $4,000 in property inside the garage was damaged.
