Dangerous drifting and wind chills expected in west central Minn tonight, no travel advised in SW Minn tonight

Blowing and drifting snow will occur into this evening followed by dangerous wind chills across west central Minnesota through south central Minnesota as gusty north winds occur. No travel is advised in much of southwest Minnesota due to dangerous cold and drifting conditions.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen said the wind and cold temperatures tonight will result in dangerous wind chill values from 25 below to 45 below zero across central and southern Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises no unnecessary travel tonight in southwestern Minnesota due to blowing snow, heavy drifting and reduced visibility.

Travel conditions in the following counties are considered hazardous with extremely cold wind chills, significantly reduced visibility and heavy ground drifting. Counties in this area include: Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Pipestone, Redwood and Yellow Medicine.

A winter weather advisory for blowing and drifting snow has been extended for southwestern and southern Minnesota. The advisory area stretches from St. James to Mankato to Owatonna and southward to northern Iowa. Northerly winds near 20 mph will persist into tonight, causing considerable blowing and drifting snow.

East to west orientated roads, like Interstate 90, may encounter difficult travel conditions. Visibilities will be reduced to under a mile at time, with temporary whiteout conditions possible.

Dangerous wind chill values will persist across central and southern Minnesota Wednesday morning and may occur again latest Wednesday night into Thursday morning as winds increase once again.

Another blast of Arctic air is posted to push across west central Minnesota Sunday night and Monday. This could result in a period of strong winds, snow and falling temperatures.
