Kayaker drowns in Renville County
OLIVIA -- An Iowa woman drowned Saturday after her kayak apparently overturned on Hawk Creek southwest of Sacred Heart.
Authorities identified her as Diane Bigler-Hagenow, 55, of Newhall, Iowa.
Renville County Sheriff Scott Hable said four other individuals who were kayaking with Bigler-Hagenow were unhurt. The victim had been wearing a personal flotation device when her kayak overturned, Hable said.
The Sheriff's Office received the call shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday that there had been a possible drowning in the creek. The exact location was west of Renville County Road 10, between 800th and 810th Avenues, about 3.5 miles southwest of Sacred Heart.
After an extensive search, Bigler-Hagenow's body was recovered a mile south of 810th Avenue. The rest of the kayaking group was found nearby.
Agencies assisting with the search and recovery included the Renville, Redwood and Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, police departments from Sacred Heart, Renville, Danube, Echo, Upper Sioux and Granite Falls, fire departments from Wood Lake, Granite Falls and Sacred Heart, the Sacred Heart SHIRT team and the Granite Falls Ambulance Service.
