Madison, Minn., registers heat index of 124 degrees, some relief is coming Thursday

WILLMAR -- According to statistics from the National Weather Service, Madison registered a heat index of 124 degrees around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, tying two other cities for the top heat and humidity honors.

NWS statistics showed that Roseville and Madelia also reached heat index values of 124 degrees. Willmar reached a 117 degree heat index around 2:55 p.m., Prinsburg hit 119 degrees around 6 p.m. Litchfield also reached 119 degrees around 4:10 p.m. and Olivia hit 113 degrees around 7 p.m.

The end of the heat wave is coming, the weather service forecasters say, but it comes with a risk of strong to severe thunderstorms as a cold front passes through the area this afternoon and evening. The heat index values will reach 105 to 115 degrees, with temperatures well into the 90s.

Cooler and less humid air will follow the front with highs in the 80s on Thursday. Unfortunately, more hot and humid air returns on Friday and Saturday with heat indices reaching 100 again by Saturday. More typical mid-July temperatures return Sunday and next week.
