Kandiyohi, Swift Co., Minn., law officers ticket 135 drivers during speed enforcement

WILLMAR -- Law enforcement officers from Kandiyohi and Swift counties ticketed 135 motorists for speeding during the July statewide speed enforcement effort.

The Atwater, Benson and Willmar police departments and the Kandiyohi and Swift county sheriff's offices participated in the campaign that was coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.

According to the news release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's office, unsafe and illegal speed is the most commonly reported contributing factor in fatal crashes. From 2009 to 2011, speed was a contributing factor in 254 fatalities statewide.

In Kandiyohi County, an average speeding citation for 10 mph over the limit is $130. Motorists stopped at 20 mph over the speed limit face double the fine, and those ticketed traveling more than 100 mph can lose their license for six months.

"When we increase our speeds behind the wheel, we increase our chances of crashing," says Benson Police Chief Mike Jambor. "This campaign was about educating motorists that speeding is a dangerous and potentially deadly habit."
