Janet Jans

GRANITE FALLS — Minnesota's Middle School Educator of the Year is a native of Granite Falls.

Janet Jans, a 1981 graduate of the Granite Falls High School, was recognized as the Middle Level Educator of the Year by her peers in the the Minnesota Middle School Association.

She is only the second teacher in the arts discipline to receive this award. It was presented at the association's convention in Minneapolis earlier this month.

Jans has taught choir, classroom music and band at Southview Middle School in Edina for over 28 years. She holds a bachelor's degree from Luther College and master's degree in music education from the University of St. Thomas. She holds a certificate in technology and teaching from Hamline University and is currently pursuing national board certification.

She is also a church musician: singing, conducting, coordinating and playing the flute.

She is the daughter of Alvin and Eleanor Sandquist of Granite Falls.
