GRANITE FALLS — Two Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotives derailed at about 1:30 p.m. Friday in northwest Granite Falls, said Granite Falls Mayor David Smiglewski.

The derailment happened after a southbound train pulled up to a parallel side track that serves a quarry. The train had five locomotives. The last two locomotives were disconnected from the first three and had backed into the side track with the intent of picking up some cars loaded with aggregate.

The two locomotives went around a curve and the rails spread apart. The first three locomotives were reconnected to the train and departed, leaving the derailed locomotives and quarry cars.

Smiglewski said the derailment was an unusual occurrence but nothing tipped over. He said equipment was coming to move the locomotives.
