Search for suspect in eastern N.D. expands after car reported stolen

FINLEY, N.D. – The report of a stolen car early today has authorities expanding a manhunt that began near here Tuesday.

The search for Dylan Klade and Corey Roper started about 11 a.m. Tuesday in fields near Finley and Portland in eastern North Dakota.

Steele County Sheriff Wayne Beckman said deputies checked on a motor home parked on N.D. Highway 200 and discovered it was stolen from Thief River Falls.

“A short time later, my deputies were south of that location following two males walking,” Beckman said Tuesday night. “They took off running, ended up in a cornfield and then the chase was on."

Roper, a high-risk sex offender from Thief River Falls, was captured Tuesday and the hunt continued for Klade, who on Tuesday night was believed to be hiding in a cornfield in Steele County.

However, about 6 a.m. Wednesday, a car was reported stolen from a rural Portland farmstead in Traill County. Beckman said authorities believe Klade may now have the vehicle.

The car stolen from the Portland farmstead was described as a 2006, red, four-door Pontiac G6 with North Dakota license plates JBK184.

Klade is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, 150 pounds, with short black hair. He was last seen wearing a white tank top and blue jeans and no shoes, authorities said.

Klade also is from Thief River Falls.

Beckman said the owner of the stolen car found a riding lawn mower parked on his property that authorities believe was taken from an unoccupied farmstead.

Beckman said that unoccupied farmstead was the last property authorities checked Tuesday night before suspending their search for the day.

According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections predatory offender registry, Roper, 22, was released from prison Sept. 6. He was convicted of engaging in sexual conduct with a female victim under the age of 14.

More than a dozen agencies were involved in Tuesday’s search.
