Willmar teenager is elected mayor at Boys State event
MARSHALL -- Alec Lykken, son of Steve and Dawn Lykken of Willmar, was the winner of one of 14 simulated mayoral races Wednesday at the American Legion Boys State at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
According to a news release, Lykken, a junior at Willmar High School, is one of 400 high school juniors from across the state attending this year's program.
Boys State is designed to teach students about real world leadership by simulating the process of all levels of state government.
As part of the program, students are assigned to fictional parties and recreate the nominating processes of the state, county, and local levels of government.
Students in the program arrived Sunday and will stay until Saturday. At the end of the week, scholarships will be handed out to selected students and a governor will be named.
