Willmar woman honored as Queen of the Lakes

WILLMAR — Laura Swartz, above, was named 2015 Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes Friday evening at the Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota campus.

Swartz, a 2012 graduate of Willmar High School, completed her year as the Willmar Queen of the Festivals in June. The daughter of Scott and Monica Swartz is a student at St. Thomas University in St. Paul.

The Queen of the Lakes Coronation has been a part of the Aquatennial celebration since its first year in 1940. This year, 47 candidates representing the Minnesota communities they are from or a festival their community holds, competed for the title.

As an ambassador of Minneapolis, the Queen of the Lakes and Aquatennial Princesses travel throughout the state and region representing the city, making over 300 appearances throughout the year and traveling to festivals throughout the U.S. and the world representing Minneapolis.
