Updated: Man fatally shot by police in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE - A man was fatally shot by police and a second man was wounded during a traffic stop about 11 p.m. Wednesday night, according to authorities here.

The second man was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Police Capt. Pete Koerner says it happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday when the Washington County special response team stopped a vehicle in Cottage Grove.

One man died at the scene. The other was taken to Regions Hospital. His condition hasn't been released. A third person in the car was taken into custody.

Police haven't said why the officers made the stop or what prompted them to open fire.

The officers involved will be put on paid administrative leave, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident, according to the press release.

The Washington County special response team deals with crisis, high-risk or other situations that require specialized officers.

More information is to be released about 11 a.m. today.
