Albert Lea HS cuts cheerleading

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (AP) -- Gimme a C! Gimme a U! Gimme a T! Albert Lea High School has decided to cut cheerleading from its list of extracurricular activities this year because of a steep decline in participation.

The Albert Lea Tribune reports today that school activities director Clay Anderson proposed the cut to the school board this summer after tracing a steady decrease in interest in the last five years. He says numbers for the 2009-2010 sports season were too low to assemble a full varsity squad.

Anderson thinks the growing popularity of the school's dance team could be a reason. He says the school will hang on to its uniforms and cheerleading could be revived someday if interest rebounds.
