Authorities trying to determine whether masked man knew people inside Blue Earth house

BLUE EARTH, Minn. (AP) -- A masked man entered a southern Minnesota home early today and attacked its occupants, killing a 38-year-old man and seriously injuring three others, authorities said.

No one had been arrested by afternoon, and authorities were still trying to determine whether the masked man knew the people inside the Blue Earth house.

"It's still too early to tell," said Jill Oliveira, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. "We are pursuing both angles -- that it was a stranger, or that it may have been somebody that the individuals or that one of the individuals knew."

Police arrived about 12:30 a.m. today to find the man dead and two women and a girl injured. The women and child were taken to a local hospital and then to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester for more treatment.

The hospital would not release information on their conditions.

A 6-year-old girl in the house wasn't harmed.

Oliveira said authorities did not immediately know what type of weapon was used in the attack.

The man's body was being taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office, and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine his identity and how he died.

Oliveira said officials were open to the possibility that there might be more than one suspect involved, but the preliminary investigation suggested the attacker was a single masked man.

The Blue Earth Police Department and the Faribault County Sheriff's Office are also are investigating.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Faribault County Sheriff's Office at 507-526-6180.
