Lastrup cools off Rockets 3-1

MAPLE LAKE — The Lastrup Lakers cooled off the red-hot Raymond Rockets 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Irish Stadium in the opening round of the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Rockets entered the single-elimination state tournament with a record of 25-12 after winning a combined 7 of 11 games in the Cornbelt League and Region 11C playoffs. Lastrup improved to 17-7 and will now face Region 10 champion Moorhead in the Round of 32 next Sunday in Delano.

Lastrup, located just east of Little Falls, limited the Rockets to seven hits while cranking out 11 of its own. Winning pitcher Chad Weiss worked all nine innings, walking three and striking out four along the way.

Jordan Smith was tagged with the loss after surrendering nine hits and three earned runs in seven innings of work. The right-hander kept Raymond in the game by not issuing a walk and striking out four.

Lastrup scored a run in the first inning and put two more runs on the scoreboard in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Smith and draftees Ben Johnson (Kimball) and Dylan Gass (Bird Island) shut down the Lakers for the remainder of the game, but Raymond was able to produce just one run. Neither Johnson or Gass walked a batter, but Lastrup was aided by two Raymond errors.

Calvin Kosminskas scored the lone Raymond run in the third after getting knocked in by Zach Nelson.

Kosminskas, Mike Jeseritz and Brandon Madsen each doubled, while Smith added two singles at the plate. Madsen and Kyle Knott also singled.
