Ridgewater one match from nationals

WILLMAR — The Ridgewater volleyball team lived up to its billing as Region 13A's top seed with a solid, three-set victory over St. Cloud Technical on Friday.

The Warriors prevailed 25-8, 25-14 and 25-19.

Ridgewater takes on M State-Fergus Falls, the No. 2 seed, at noon today at Ridgewater College for the region championship and a spot in the NJCAA Division III national tournament.

M State defeated Rochester 25-22, 14-25, 25-15 and 25-20 in Friday's other semifinal at Ridgewater.

Hailey Leiding played a solid match for the Warriors, committing just two hitting errors in 21 attempts (.476) and leading the team with 12 kills. She also had two of Ridgewater's three solo blocks.

"I was pleased with how we approached this match and executed throughout," Warriors head coach Joe Sussenguth said. "Offensively, we capitalized on our opportunities to score early in serve receive or freeball situations. If there were long rallies, we found a way to win that point."

Ashley Froelich finished with eight kills, Kiana Johnson had six, and Baylie Kubesh had 27 set assists, three ace serves and 10 digs.

Most importantly, the Warriors were not overwhelmed playing in a big match, Sussenguth said.

"We stayed within our character and didn't let our adrenaline lead us to unforced errors," he said. "Our serving was crucial to our defense, if we didn't score off it, it was aggressive enough to keep St. Cloud out of system."
