WarHawks fall to Steel in OT

WILLMAR — A three-goal second period proved to be too much for the Willmar WarHawks in a 4-3 overtime loss to New Ulm on Wednesday night at the Willmar Civic Center.

Willmar got on the board first with a shot from Riley Tigrett who recently was named the NA3HL West Division Star of the Week. The goal, his eighth of the year, was a power play goal assisted by Dylan Gast and Alec Skar.

It was a strong period for the WarHawks but the Steel offense showed up in the second, starting just under three minutes into the period with a goal from Orlando Scherz. New Ulm made it 2-1 six minutes later with a Jared Erickson goal.

The WarHawks tied it at two just before the 14-minute mark with another powerplay goal, this time from Jordan Cooper. They finished the game with two powerplay goals on six opportunities.

"Jordan is one of those young guys for us that is really starting to figure it out," said WarHawk head coach Chris Blaisuis.

New Ulm was intent on getting the lead, though, and scored a goal from Cory Martinez just minutes before the end of the period.

"We played a strong first and third period," Blaisuis said. "But we played a horrible second period. We scored but they outshot us and just played better."

In the third period, Max Oelkers put a long shot on net and it snuck by New Ulm goaltender Jon Albers to force an overtime period.

The WarHawks couldn't get anything going in overtime though because they lost the opening faceoff and New Ulm went on to score just 40 seconds later.

"It's taking time but I really like the way we're trending," Blaisuis said. "Our boys played a good game, we just need to string all three periods together."

They'll try to do that against Granite City at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday in Sauk Rapids.
