Coming through in the clutch
WILLMAR — Akeem Oglesby converted a game-winning floater with 38 seconds to play and Ridgewater hung on at the free throw line and on the defensive end to secure a 76-72 comeback victory over Riverland on Tuesday night at home.
Jack Turnbull scored 20 points and Oglesby added 14 points to pace the Warriors, who charged back from an eight-point second half deficit.
As Turnbull led the charge with seven points, Ridgewater went on a 14-5 run after trailing 60-52 with nine minutes to play. Oglesby gave the Warriors a 66-65 lead with a basket with 4:04 remaining and the teams traded baskets until the final minute.
After the Warriors point guard put his team up 73-72, the Blue Devils called timeout to set up a play to regain the lead. They would never get that chance, however, as a traveling violation gave the ball right back to Ridgewater.
Taylor DeLaughter, who finished with 11 points, stepped to the line with 25 seconds on the clock and suck both free throw attempts to give the Warriors a three-point lead. Marvin Perkins stymied Riverland's Darius Bell on the ensuing possession and Bell's three-pointer came up all air.
As it did throughout the final stretch, Ridgewater came up big at the free throw line as Turnbull laid the dagger with a free throw with eight seconds remaining. Following Oglesby's jumper with just over four minutes to play, Perkins and DeLaughter contributed all of the Warriors' points for the next three minutes by going 6-for-6 at the line.
Ridgewater shot 48.3 percent from the field and, aided by only five turnovers, scored 1.24 points per possession. Riverland shot 50.9 percent, but made just 3 of 13 3-pointers and shot 59.1 percent at the free throw line.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Blue Devils carried a 33-32 lead into halftime. Turnbull led the Warriors with nine first-half points, while Oglesby added eight points.
Jace Klinkner led Riverland with 17 points as the Blue Devils had four players score in double digits.
