Calves killed in barn fire

ELROSA — At least 25 calves were killed at the Wuertz Dairy Farm in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, when the barn they were in caught fire. The fire began sometime before 12:52 a.m. Thursday morning when deputies were dispatched to the scene, according to a press release from the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

There were no human injuries reported.

When deputies arrived at the farm, at the 35000 block of County Road 14 the barn was completely engulfed in flames. Approximately 30 cows were housed in the barn. The homeowners, who were awaken by a passerby, were able to open one of the gates to allow a some of the animals to escape. The property is owned by Peter and Lisa Wuertz of Melrose.

The barn was determined a complete loss and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the sheriff's office release said.

The Elrosa Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Lake Henry Fire, Belgrade Fire, Paynesville Ambulance and Stearns Electric.
