Jennie Engelkes, 96 of New London, died Monday, October 2, 2017 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Evangelical Covenant Church. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the service at Church. Burial will be in the Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Cemetery. Jennie Engelkes was born on May 19, 1921, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit and Tillie (Feenstra) DeJong Sr. She grew up in Sheldon, Iowa. In1939 she was united in marriage to Bill Hoekstra. To this union one daughter was born. In 1941, she was united in marriage to John Engelkes. To this union two sons and two daughters were born. They made their home in Iowa before moving to New London in 1952 where she was a homemaker. John and Jennie were able to share in 38 years of marriage before his death in 1980. In 1989, Jennie was united in marriage to Clayton Sandvig. They made their home in Glenwood and Big Bend. Jennie moved to Benson in 1995 after Clayton's death. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, sewing and dancing.
Jennie is survived by her children, Wilma Jane (Dwaine) Kruse of Adrian and Rodney (Julie) Engelkes of Belgrade; son-in-law, Steve Sietsema; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Louisa Jacobsma, Gerrit (Erma) DeJong, Tillie Rook and Arnold DeJong. She was preceded in death by her husbands; children, Jerald Engelkes, Orla Kindred and Elaine Sietsema; granddaughter, Kristine Kindred and numerous siblings.
