Mother faces life in prison after binding hands of 4-year-old autistic son with belts, then setting him on fire
MILWAUKEE - A 23-year-old mother is facing criminal charges after she allegedly bound her 4-year-old son's hands with multiple belts, placed a garbage bag over his head and then set him on fire, FOX6-TV is reporting.
Amelia DiStasio faces a charge of first degree intentional homicide in the death of Antonio DiStasio, which occurred on Sept. 28. If convicted, DiStasio faces life in prison.
According to a criminal complaint published by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
The Milwaukee Fire Department was dispatched to Di Stasio's apartment the morning of Sept. 28 for a report of "smoke." After force-entry was used, firefighters obveserved smoke coming from both the stove and a pile of clothing in the bathtub.
After entering the bathroom, firefighters found a lifeless child with his hands bound behind his back with several belts and a garbage bag over his head.
Investigators learned the victim's body had been set on fire with the use of an unknown accelerant. A pet guinea pig was found drowned in its cage next to the tub, according to the complaint. A bottle of cooking oil was also located in the bathroom sink.
After police arrived, they learned the victim was DiStasio's 4-year-old son, Antonio DiStasio, who lived in the apartment with his mother.
The apartment's smoke detector had been removed and placed in water, according to the complaint published by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
An autopsy of the child's body revealed "significant charring" to his skin, and thermal injuries "to the majority of his body."
His death was ruled a homicide.
