Standoff in Benson ends peacefully
BENSON - An attempt to serve an arrest warrant led to a standoff Thursday in Benson.
The incident began when officers with the Benson Police Department, along with agents from the CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force and Swift County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence in Benson to serve an arrest warrant on a male suspect wanted by the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
When the officers entered the residence, the suspect barricaded himself in a locked bedroom and indicated he had a firearm, the Police Department said.
Officers backed out of the home, set up a perimeter and called for assistance from the West Central SWAT team.
SWAT negotiators were able to make contact with the man and successfully talk him into surrendering, according to police. He was taken into custody by SWAT team members without further incident.
During the standoff, officers went door to door of homes in the immediate area, advising residents of the situation and offering the city hall as a temporary shelter for those who wanted to leave until the situation was resolved.
The Benson Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Swift County Sheriff's Office, CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force, West Central SWAT, Minnesota State Patrol, Swift County Benson Ambulance and Benson Street Department.
