Semi, farm tractor collide in Renville County
SACRED HEART — Two drivers escaped serious injury in a collision between a semitractor-trailer and farm tractor in Renville County that sent both vehicles into a wetland at 1:24 p.m. Friday about three miles southeast of Sacred Heart.
The Renville County Sheriff's Office reported that Wayne Berglund, 81, of Montevideo, was driving a 2007 Volvo semitractor pulling a belly dump trailer loaded with sand northbound on County Road 12. Michael Bozich, 55, of Morton, was driving a 1977 John Deere tractor pulling a gravity wagon loaded with soybeans, also northbound on County Road 12.
The semi driven by Berglund was attempting to pass the farm tractor driven by Bozich when the tractor crossed the centerline of the roadway and collided with the semi near the intersection of County Road 12 and 810th Avenue, according to a preliminary investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
The collision sent both vehicles into a ditch and into a wetland, where they were partially submerged. One of the fuel tanks on the semi was punctured and leaked diesel fuel.
Both drivers were able to get out of their vehicles, and they were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The Renville County Sheriff's Office coordinated with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for the diesel fuel cleanup.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
Also assisting at the scene were the Sacred Heart Medical Response Unit and the Renville Ambulance.
