Willmar Mayor Calvin wins in a landslide

WILLMAR — Incumbent Willmar Mayor Marv Calvin won a second term handily, defeating challenger Steve Peppin with 73.81 percent of the vote.

The unofficial results from the 12 city precincts showed Calvin with 5,149 votes. Peppin collected 1,773. Write-in candidates had 54 votes.

Calvin was Willmar's first full-time fire chief/fire marshal, serving from January 2000 to August 2012. He was also the fire training liaison for the Minnesota State Colleges and University System through Ridgewater college for many years. Calvin started working in fire service in 1977 and also was a paramedic.

Calvin pointed to his experience, leadership and vision for reasons why he deserved another term.

Peppin moved to Willmar several years ago and attended Ridgewater College. He has since opened several businesses and today has Pep's Barber Shop and Relentless Ink, a tattoo shop.

Peppin said he ran for mayor to give people hope and to inspire.
