Willmar Schools operating levy passes

WILLMAR — Willmar Public Schools voters approved an operating levy for the school district Tuesday.

The levy passed 6,047 to 3,649.

The operating levy will raise $225,000 a year. An operating levy is used by a school district for paying for educational programs, building maintenance and other expenses.

The levy of $45.10 per student will not raise property taxes. It is an extension of a $201.51 levy approved 10 years ago. New laws have given school boards more local control over operating levies.

The Willmar School Board was able to renew most of that on its own, but needed to ask voters to approve the remaining $45.10.

The state of Minnesota provides most funding for school districts, but it hasn't kept up with inflation for more than a decade. Most school districts in the state have at least one operating levy to maintain programs.
