Tony Gartner

Tony Gartner, age 92, of Olivia died Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Monday, July 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery and military rites will be provided by the Bird Island American Legion. Visitation is Sunday 3-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at St. Mary's Church for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's School, or donor's choice.

Anton James Gartner was born August 5, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, to Anton and Theresa (Mueller) Gartner. Tony grew up in Chicago until the age of nine when the family moved to Kingman Township. He attended school through the 8th grade in District #117. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. Tony married Ruth Shamla on April 8, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. He was a lifelong farmer retiring in 1986. Tony was a member of the Bird Island American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Olivia Golf Club, and 4-H. He enjoyed playing scrabble, cards, golfing, dancing, fishing, and visiting with family and friends. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Tony is survived by his wife, Ruth Gartner of Olivia; six children: Lois (and Ron) Langsweirdt of Georgetown, TX, Henry (and Mary) Gartner of Bird Island, Theresa (and Rick) Myre of Edina, Phyllis (and Bill) Bunker of Coon Rapids, Joe (and Deb) Gartner of Golden Valley, and Janice (and Duane) Marble of Mankato; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and three siblings: Matthew Gartner of Chicago, Il, Anna Haen of Renville, and Jim (and Marilyn) Gartner of Olivia; and sister-in-law Eleanor Gartner of FL. Tony was preceded in death by his parents; son Benedict; four brothers: Joe and John in infancy, George, and Andy; one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
