A limb has fallen from the Flynn Family tree.

Michael Flynn, 80, of Alexandria, died peacefully Thursday, January 5, 2017 at his home.

No formal funeral service will be held, in accordance with Mike's wishes. A gathering for family and friends will be held June 10, with further arrangements to be determined.

Michael David Flynn was born on July 6, 1936 to George and Anna (Vangstad) Flynn in Minneapolis. In the early 1940s the family moved to Osakis, where George ran a car dealership. Mike attended school in Osakis and graduated high school in 1954. After graduation, Mike joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at China Lake, California. He served his country for three years. After discharge from the Marine Corps, Mike attended Valley City State University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree. While attending college, Mike met his "perfect life partner" Gwen Simonson. Mike and Gwen were united in holy matrimony and moved to Duluth, where Mike accepted his first teaching position. While living in Duluth, Mike and Gwen were blessed with the births of their sons Sean and Terry.

In 1964 Mike moved his family to Granite Falls where he accepted a teaching position. Mike taught social studies and psychology at the high school for thirty years. He also coached football, served as Athletic Director and taught drivers training. Mike was very proud of each and every football player that he had the opportunity to coach. After retirement from teaching, Mike and Gwen lived in Arkansas and then move to Alexandria,to live closer to family.

Mike enjoyed spending time at the cabin, "The Final Exam", on Lake Miltona. He was an avid gardener and was an expert at puzzles. Mike's true enjoyment revolved around sports. Not only did he enjoy coaching, he enjoyed being a spectator. It was common knowledge that Mike would be listening or watching the game, or games, of the day. As Mike's family grew, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their endeavors. Mike's grandchildren and great grandchildren new how proud he was of each and every accomplishment.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Gwen, of Alexandria; sons Sean (Alida) Flynn of Granite Falls and Terry Flynn of Ada; grandchildren Stacy (Kris) Jacobson, Jesse Flynn, Melissa (Taylor) Dahl, Annie (Drew) Kessler, Sandy (Sam) Lauer, Emily (Keven) Bienias, Jamie (Eric) Preuss, Ali Flynn, Katie Flynn; 11 great grandchildren; sister Dar Dunn of Rochester; sister Bev Grossman of Alexandria; sister-in-law Mary Flynn of Mankato; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents George and Anna Flynn; brothers George Flynn, Tom Flynn, Pat Flynn; and grandson Kelly Flynn.
