Viola Johnson

Viola "Vi" Johnson, 89, of Willmar, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Hilltop Healthcare in Watkins. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Saturday, July 15th, at Living Hope-Evangelical Free Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Clover Leaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. www.hafh.org

Viola Loraine Johnson was born on April 2, 1928, near Svea, the daughter of Alexander and Ebba (Anderson) Carlson. She grew up in the Svea area, where she attended country school and later graduated from Willmar High School in the Class of 1946. She went on to attend Willmar Community College where she received an AA in Social Work. Viola was united in marriage to Floyd Manthei on November 2, 1946. She was united in marriage to Doug Johnson on October 8, 1983. Vi worked at Standard Oil, The Music Store, Lutheran Social Services, Heartland Community Action, the mental health unit at Rice Memorial Hospital, and Rice Care Center as a social worker. She also volunteered for many organizations over the years.

She was baptized and confirmed at Svea Lutheran Church and was a committed volunteer at her church, Living Hope-Evangelical Free Church, teaching Sunday school, Bible study, and was involved in many areas of her church.

Vi enjoyed painting, quilting, crocheting, sewing, gardening and cooking. She was very musical, playing piano and organ by ear, she also wrote poetry and was in a writers group. Her family and friends were very important to her and she loved to entertain and host tea parties.

Viola is survived by her children: Vickie (and Barry) Martinson of Ramsey, Mark (and Donna) Manthei of Litchfield, Teresa (and Len) Stekly of Litchfield, David (and Pam) Manthei of Dassel; grandchildren: Jeffrey, Scott, Leah, John, Chris, Shannon and Ryan; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Ella Mae Nordmanns of Raymond; brother, Eldon (and Avis) Carlson of Maynard; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Doug Johnson in October 2003; three brothers: Harry, Edwin and Axel; sister Minnie and granddaughter Sara.
