Fern L. Watland, 87, of Willmar died on Friday, August 11, 2017 at Compassionate Cottage in Willmar. Her funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, at Living Hope Evangelical Free Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Clover Leaf Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Fern Leila Watland was born in rural Waseca County on July 20, 1930. She was the daughter of William and Florence (Wetzstein) Krause. After graduating from High School in Waseca, she attended Mankato State Teachers College graduating in 1951. She taught country school in Manchester, Minnesota before moving to St. Louis Park where she became a kindergarten teacher. She continued her career in Willmar as a Title 1 teacher and kindergarten teacher.

In 1957 she married Elwyn (Al) Watland. After living in the Twin Cities, they moved to Willmar in 1968. They were active in their church and were charter members of the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar (now Living Hope.) Fern was active in the music program as organist, pianist and many other ministries. Her love for Jesus was evident to all who knew her. She was an excellent cook and baker and loved to entertain.

After retiring in 1995, she enjoyed traveling, reading and volunteering. She was an active hospice volunteer for a number of years.

In addition to her love for Jesus, Fern had a love for people, especially her family. Her unending love for Elwyn, who passed away in 1993 from a long illness, has been a testament to all of her true love and commitment. She loved her three sons immensely and always enjoyed a family get together. She was the perfect grandma, creating many memories with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Mark and Patty Watland of Willmar, Bruce and Lorri Watland of Willmar, and Brian and Michelle Watland of Custer, SD. In addition to eight grandchildren, she is survived by her sister, Arlene Foels of Waseca and brother Robert Krause of Waseca.

In addition to her husband Elwyn, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister Shirley.
