Editorial: Thank a veteran today for freedom

America celebrates Veterans Day today across the land.

To most Americans it is just another workday, unless you are a federal employee who gets a holiday. Many Americans do not even know why we celebrate Veterans Day or they confuse it with Memorial Day.

Veterans Day is a day to honor and celebrate the service, sacrifice and bravery of every United States veteran.

Historically, Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of fighting in World War I. In 1954, the holiday was renamed to Veterans Day in honor of American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day program were held across west central Minnesota Wednesday and some today to honor veterans.

Remember all the freedoms each American enjoys today -- to go to work, go to the church or to pursue your own happiness -- is because of the hard work and sacrifice of our veterans.

This freedom of choice makes the U.S. unique in this world -- the shining beacon of freedom.

So today is a good day to take a minute and thank any veteran you know.

A simple thank you goes a long ways.
