Editorial: Football is near as Vikings hit camp

As July nears its end, it is time for training camp for the Minnesota Vikings and all the purple faithful are excited as football pre-season is just around the corner.

The season opener is scheduled Sept. 8 against the Detroit Lions. That’s a good game to start the season.

Vikings fans in west central Minnesota will be especially attentive this preseason as Litchfield native John Carlson seeks his comeback from the 2012 season. A football college star at Notre Dame and pro at Seattle, Carlson signed with the Vikings last year, but suffered an injury early in training camp and never caught up.

This season will be Carlson’s sixth in the National Football League and he is looking to return with productive numbers in 2013. We wish him the best in the coming season.

The Vikings are also looking to prove they are for real in 2013, following their surprising 10-6 season with a playoff berth and an outstanding season from running back Adrian Peterson.

The team still has questions to answer in 2013: Can Christian Ponder solidify his role as starting quarterback, can Peterson continue his record production, can the wide receiver corps develop and can the defense establish its dominance?

This season also will be historic as it is the last year the Vikings will play in the Metrodome. The team is scheduled to play in TCF Bank Stadium in 2014 and 2015, while a new Vikings stadium is built.

While the Vikings will have to prove themselves again in 2013, this could be an interesting season if things come together, especially if Peterson goes on another record-setting season.

Skol Vikings.
